Find inspiration for your fiber art in small group classes taught by skilled hobbyists to professionals who have a passion for fostering creativity in fiber art. Classes for beginners include topics such as fundamental sewing skills, crochet, and embroidery. More experienced students can build on their skills with classes on visible mending, machine sewing, basket weaving, and more. Classes are taught in the Cottage and House and vary each month.

Learn how to tie a slip knot, how to chain stitch (the foundation of crochet), and the single crochet stitch in this fun introductory class. Whether you need a refresher or you’ve never picked up a hook before, this is the class for you!
Class will begin with choosing your project, yarn color, and the correct sized hook. All materials are included, but students are welcome to bring their own yarn or crochet hooks as well as a notepad and pen for taking notes. Pattern options: Washcloth, Straight Scarf, or Baby Blanket

Intro to Knitting
Wednesday, May 1 ~ 6pm to 8pm

Whether you need a refresher or you’ve never picked up knitting needles before, we’ve got you covered! Students will focus on how to tie a slip knot, casting on (getting the stitches on the needle), and the knit stitch. Then we’ll touch on the purl stitch to give you the basic foundation to knit any beginner pattern. We’ll also go over how to cast off (take your project off your needles) so you can finish your project at home.
Students will begin by choosing:
• Project: either a washcloth or a straight scarf
• Yarn: various types and colors will be available
• Tools: the correct type for the selected yarn and project
Students will leave class with the knowledge to start knitting basic, rectangular patterns. Come with all your knitting questions and take home the confidence to begin knitting on your own.

Needle Felting: Baby Duck Birdwatcher
Saturday, April 27 ~ 12:30pm to 5pm
Enjoy creating an adorable spring decoration from needle-felted wool in this fun and relaxing class. Everyone will learn basic needle felting techniques with lots of guidance to complete the curious duck and its sweet birdwatching details. Each completed duckling will be approximately 8 inches tall. No experience is necessary.
All materials and tools are provided including wool, glass eyes, wire, diagrams and instructions, a set of needles in various sizes, a wooden handle for needles, an organizer container, and a reusable tote.

Sewing is for Everyone: Make a Pet Bed
Thursday, May 2 ~ 5:30pm to 8pm
Celebrate National Pet Month by learning step-by-step how to sew a comfy and customized bed for your favorite dog or cat. You can bring a fabric of your choice, or stop by 577’s Curiosity Shop beginning April 29 where you can choose to purchase a preselected fabric perfect for this project from a variety we’ve pulled aside.
Please bring the following supplies to class: sewing machine*; fabric scissors; pins; thread; seam ripper; fabric: one yard of upholstery fabric for a large bed, 1/2 yard for a small bed; polyester stuffing for a bed.
Please note: Sewing machines must be in good working order and must be able to be threaded by the user. In some cases, your machine may require professional servicing before taking this class.

Embroidered Bluebird Collage
Wednesday, May 8 ~ 6pm to 8pm
If you are looking for a fresh way to stretch your embroidery or creative skills, this beginner-friendly class is it! Learn how to combine embroidery and upcycled fabric scraps into a layered piece of collaged textile art depicting a Bluebird.
We will begin by learning how to select and use print fabrics to add color and depth to a collage design and then take a playful and experimental approach to the technique of ‘thread painting’ where you will learn how to use stitches as brushstrokes and blend colors of embroidery floss to create realistic embroidery art.
All materials provided to make one 8” collage embroidery.

Knit in the Round: Beanie
Wednesday, May 15 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Once you have your basic knit and purl stitches down, let’s try some exciting new patterns – like how to knit in the round! In this beginner pattern class, you’ll learn how to cast on and knit in the round with circular needles to create a warm, simple beanie hat.
If we don’t finish your hat in class, we will go over how to finish the top. You may also bring it to a Sip & Stitch for more hands-on guidance.

Sip & Stitch: Bring Your Crochet & Knitting Projects

Enjoy a relaxing morning with fellow crochet and knitting enthusiasts as we work together on current projects while getting lots of support from your instructor. This is perfect for someone looking to start up again or someone needing help on a project. Grab your favorite morning brew from one of our many local coffee shops and let’s get you stitching!
Students are invited to bring their own tools, yarn, and any patterns they are currently working on. Students will have the opportunity to work on their own projects and have a knowledgeable instructor on hand to answer their questions and fix mistakes as needed.

Needle Felting: Nature-Themed Purse
Saturday, May 18 ~ 12:30pm to 5pm
Learn how to use wool and other media to make an adorable and useful purse. Participants can choose to decorate the outside with the instructor’s design or get guidance to create their own design. Each one-of-a-kind purse will be approximately 10 inches by eight inches when complete and includes a shoulder strap, large snap closure, and inside pocket.
Everyone will also receive needles, a felting pad, leftover wools, embellishments, wooden handle, instructions, a convenient organizer case, and a tote for carrying everything home.

Crochet a Blanket: Choose Baby, Throw, or Lap Blanket
Wednesday, May 22 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Now that you know how to start crocheting, let’s expand your stitch knowledge with some tall stitches to make a blanket quicker (and it’ll also feel lighter!).
In this class, we’ll create a custom-designed blanket by YOU. We’ll talk about increases and decreases to create a ripple or chevron pattern while also learning the half-double and double crochet stitches.
Bring your own crochet hook and yarns (approx. 3+ skeins) of your choice. Be sure to bring at least one hook that matches the recommended size on the yarn label that you’re bringing. You can also bring a few hooks near that size (one larger and one smaller) so we can try out the best one for your stitch tension.
With your chosen yarns and hook, you’ll pick your preferred size (baby blanket, lap blanket, or throw blanket) and we’ll have you crocheting and designing your very own blanket – complete with writing your own pattern.

Know Your Sewing Machine
Thursday, June 6 ~ 4:30pm to 7:30pm
Let us help you put your sewing machine to good use instead of just collecting dust in a corner. This class is perfect for anyone who doesn’t know where to start–whether your machine is new out of the box or one that you found at a yard sale, join us to learn how to properly thread your machine, wind bobbins, select stitches and perform basic routine maintenance to keep your machine running smoothly. Students will sew a 5″ x 5″ inch pincushion while learning about their machine.
Please note: Sewing machines must be in good working order and must be able to be threaded by the user. In some cases, your machine may require professional servicing before taking this class. During registration, you will be asked for the make and model number of your machine.

Needle Felting: Baby Elephant & Tiny Mouse
Saturday, June 15 ~ 11:30am to 4:30pm
Make a needle felted baby elephant in celebration of the new baby elephant born at the Toledo Zoo. This is a fun project perfect for all skill levels. Everyone will learn the basics of needle felting along with sculpting techniques, needle felting history, and new tips & tricks. Each completed project will be approximately 6 inches tall in the seated position by 6 inches across.
Everyone will also receive needles, a felting pad, leftover wools, wooden handle, instructions, a convenient organizer case, and a tote for carrying everything home.

Crochet a Pouch: Soap Saver, Purse, or Pillowcase
Tuesday, June 25 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Learn how to crochet a *seamless* pouch to reduce the amount of seaming along edges when making a pouch or pocket for any project. We’ll use this technique to create your choice of a pillowcase, soap saver, or purse. Copies of written patterns for the first two projects will be on hand for everyone to keep, and we’ll review together how to read a basic crochet pattern.
Participants will take home a crochet hook, a skein of yarn, and basic crochet patterns for their chosen Pocket pattern. A variety of yarn colors will be available for you to choose from–plus we’ll review how to pick the correct size hook for your chosen yarn and project.
Please note: Basic pillow forms and soap bars will be on hand for illustrative purposes, but everyone is encouraged to bring their own pillow form or favorite bar of soap to create a custom fit. Completed project sizes will vary based on the selected project.

Knit in the Round: Baby Mittens
Thursday, June 27 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Once you have your basic knit and purl stitches down, let’s try some exciting new patterns – like how to knit in the round!
Learn how to knit in the round on double-point needles and make simple baby mittens! In this intermediate knitting class, you’ll learn how to cast on to double-point needles, knit and purl a rib pattern without dropping stitches, how to increase, and how to cast off. We’ll seam up the top and cast on its pair. Baby mittens will be approximately 3 inches by 2 inches with finished.
All supplies (needles and yarn) are included with your tuition fee to reduce beginner frustration from the wrong tools. A variety of yarn colors will be available for you to choose from, and everyone will take home a small ball of baby yarn, a set of (4) double point knitting needles, and a printed simple knitting pattern.

Needle Felting: Garden Gnome
Saturday, June 29 ~ 12:30pm to 5pm
Needle felt this adorable project using a full wire armature body to create a fully posable gnome. This project is suitable for anyone with felting experience looking for a little more challenge, but will be simple enough even for beginners due to lots of step-by-step instruction. Completed gnomes will be approximately 9 inches tall.
Everyone will also receive needles, a felting pad, leftover wools, wooden handle, instructions, a convenient organizer case, and a tote for carrying everything home.
