Explore the art of fiber in a welcoming and creative community at 577. Our small-group classes, led by skilled fiber artists and passionate instructors, offer hands-on learning for all experience levels. Beginners can start with foundational skills like sewing, crochet, and embroidery, while more advanced participants can expand their expertise with classes on visible mending, machine sewing, basket weaving, and more. Classes take place in the Cottage and Virginia’s House, with offerings that change each month, providing endless opportunities for inspiration and discovery.

The expansion of fiber arts offerings at 577, including loom knitting, block printing, and handweaving, is made possible in part by an investment of public funds from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.

Macrame: Flower Wreath
Thursday, May 1 ~ 9:30am to 12:30pm
Unlock your creativity and dive into the world of macrame with this hands-on class! You’ll learn to create a stunning macrame flower wreath by crafting 18 or more individual macrame leaves, which will then be shaped into one large floral design.
Finished pieces will measure approximately 18 to 24 inches in diameter. If you can tie your shoes, you can learn macrame! No experience needed.
Class Note: Participants should bring a pair of sharp fabric scissors to class. All other supplies are included.

Crochet II: Crocheted Flowers
Tuesday, May 6 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Ready for a spring crochet project? Give crocheted flowers a try! In this intermediate-level class, you’ll learn how to transform magic rings and puff stitches into beautiful flowers.
The class will cover simple joining techniques so that you can turn your flowers into wall hangings, blankets, and more. Puff stitch flowers are a perfect way of using up leftover yarn, and the color combinations are endless.
All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own size 4.5 or 5 mm crochet hooks and yarn to class. Participants will create as many puff stitch flowers as time allows. Each flower is approximately 1 inch.
Prerequisite: To register for this class, participants must have taken an Intro to Crochet class at 577 or have a working knowledge of chaining, single crochet, and slip stitches.

Creative Slow Stitch Patchwork
Thursday, May 8 ~ 2pm to 4:30pm
Give your clothes a creative refresh by mixing and matching colorful fabric scraps into unique patchwork designs. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn hand sewing techniques to construct patchwork and explore how to use it for mending or embellishing clothing and other textiles. Working in an improvisational style, we’ll focus on adding patchwork elements for both fun and functional purposes. We’ll also discuss how to source fabrics for patchwork, with a variety of materials—both new and vintage—available for you to use in class.
Participants are encouraged to work and learn at their own pace. You’ll leave with both the knowledge and skills to use patchwork as a creative design element on clothing. Choose to stitch a 7” x 7” patchwork sampler or bring an item from home to begin adding patchwork during class—then head home with the materials to finish your project. Suggested items to bring include natural fiber, non-stretch clothing such as cotton shirts, denim or canvas jackets, jeans, or cotton tote bags.

Intro to Crochet
Wednesday, May 14 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Learn how to tie a slip knot, how to chain stitch (the foundation of crochet), and the single crochet stitch in this fun introductory class. Whether you need a refresher or you’ve never picked up a hook before, this is the class for you!
Class will begin with choosing your project, yarn color, and the correct sized hook. All materials are included, but students are welcome to bring their own yarn or crochet hooks as well as a notepad and pen for taking notes. Pattern options: Washcloth, Straight Scarf, or Baby Blanket. All supplies are included. No experience is necessary.
Class Note: This class is the pre-requisite class for advanced crochet classes.

Intro to Crochet for Families
Saturday, May 17 ~ 3pm to 5pm
Learn to crochet together as a family! Whether you need a refresher or you’ve never picked up a hook before, each adult and child pair will focus on how to tie a slip knot, how to chain stitch (the foundation of crochet), and the single crochet stitch. Each participant will create a project of their choice – a dishcloth, a coaster, a scarf, or a little lap blanket.
Participants will have a variety of yarns and tools on hand to choose from. We’ll start by choosing your desired project, your yarn color, and the correct sized hook. All supplies are included to reduce beginner frustration from using the wrong tools. Everyone will receive a crochet hook and a ball of yarn along with handouts for reference when practicing and helping each other at home.
Class Notes: Each registration is for one (1) youth between the ages of 7 to 17, with an accompanying adult 18 years old and older. Due to the small class size, only one adult may accompany the youth registered. If an adult would like to accompany multiple youth participants, please sign up each youth participant individually and list the adult’s name for each registration.

Needle Felting: Repurposing Vintage Teacups
Tuesday, May 20 ~ 11am to 3pm
Enjoy a relaxing and creative session as you learn the basics of needle felting while crafting a miniature wool creation to adorn a vintage teacup. Each participant will receive a teacup from the instructor’s personal collection and be guided through simple needle felting techniques to design and add personalized wool decorations—a fun and imaginative way to get creative while upcycling.
Step-by-step guidance, laughter, relaxation, and fun are always part of the process. You’ll take home a complete kit, including a china teacup with saucer, various colors of wool, special felting needles, a small organizer case, felting mat, wooden needle handle, a selection of accessories to enhance your project, a small tube of E6000 glue, and a tote bag to carry everything home. Finished project sizes will vary but are designed to fit within and around the teacup.
Class Note: If you have multi-needle tools, feel free to bring them. A Clover 5-needle holder will also be available for purchase from the instructor for $12.00.

Crochet II: Crochet a Basket
Wednesday, May 21 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Ready to take your crocheting skills to the next level? Now that you have completed Intro to Crochet and know the single crochet stitch, let’s crochet in the round! In this hands-on class, you’ll choose your yarn color and the correct-sized hook, then get started on making your very own yarn basket. You’ll also learn how to read a simple crochet pattern and gain confidence in starting your next crochet adventure.
To help reduce beginner frustration, all supplies are included—along with a color-printed pattern of your choice—so you can focus on learning with the right tools in hand. Basket sizes will vary based on your individual goals, and you’ll leave class with everything you need to finish your project at home. Participants are welcome to bring a notepad and pen to take notes. All other supplies are provided.
Prerequisite: To register for this class, participants must have taken an Intro to Crochet class at 577. Ages 16 to 17 may participate without a parent.

Sip & Stitch: For Crocheters & Knitters
Wednesday, May 28 ~ 6pm to 8pm
Enjoy a relaxing session with fellow crochet and knitting enthusiasts as we work together on current projects while getting lots of support from your instructor. This is perfect for someone looking to start up again or someone needing help on a project. Grab your favorite morning brew from one of our many local coffee shops and let’s get you stitching!
Participants are invited to bring their tools, yarn, and any patterns they are currently working on. You will have the opportunity to work on your projects and have a knowledgeable instructor on hand to answer your questions and fix mistakes as needed.

Needle Felting: Robin with a Sweet Nest of Eggs
Saturday, May 31 ~ 11:30am to 4:30pm
Enjoy a relaxing and creative session as you learn to make an adorable needle-felted robin with its sweet nest of eggs. Participants will learn basic needle felting techniques to make their bird, nest, and eggs before completing their project with wire legs and found objects for a more realistic effect.
Step-by-step guidance, laughter, relaxation, and fun are always part of the process. You’ll take home a complete kit, including a variety of wool and special needles, a small organizer case, a felting mat, a wooden needle handle, wire cutter, scissors, written instructions with diagrams to help finish at home any project not completed in class, and a tote bag to carry everything. Completed projects are approximately life-sized.
Class Note: If you have multi-needle tools, feel free to bring them. A Clover 3-needle holder will be available from the instructor for $10.00, and a Clover 5-needle holder will also be available for purchase from the instructor for $12.00.
