2025 Dot Day Project: Collaborative Mural

2025 Dot Day Project: Collaborative Mural

Special Project presented by Avery Bohman, 577 Community Engagement Coordinator

Each September around the 15th, Peter H. Reynolds, author of The Dot, celebrates creativity, art, and making your mark with International Dot Day. Schools, libraries, and organizations around the world create inspiring projects, activities, and games, and share stories of self-discovery and creativity.

This year at 577, we created a collaborative work of art made by staff, visitors, and class participants during the Youth Art Adventures: Dot Day! class and the final Music in the Gardens event of the season.

The art showcases the courage and creativity of artists of all ages, both children and adults. Vashti, the main character from the story, paints a large swirl of colors, textures, and patterns.

The artwork features a combination of paints, mixed media collage, stickers, crayons, and markers, and is a representation of creativity, imagination, individuality, and making your mark. Everyone is an artist!

Visit the mural in the Welcome Center & Curiosity Shop, open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and find inspiration for your own creativity. While you’re there, browse the art section for paints, papers, and other supplies to spark your next project.

The collaborative Dot Day mural will remain on display through our next Storytime on Monday, October 13, at 10:30am. This free program is open to all and designed for children ages 2–6 and their favorite adults. Storytime is held outdoors on the Outdoor Stage if the weather allows or moves inside Virginia’s House or the Log House for inclement weather.

Past Dot Day projects are also on view, including the colorful 2023 watercolor dots and the playful 2024 Dot Day Tree collage, where everyone signed their name and made their mark.

Special thanks to Hannah Chen, 577’s Fall Program Intern; Julie Winder, Program Assistant; and Bennett O. Dowling, Organic Landscape Horticulturist, for helping bring this project to life.
